Drs. Paul Minotty, Roger Meyer, David O’Brien, and Stephen Tate with New Vision Eye Center in Vero Beach have joined the clinical teaching faculty of the Florida State University College of Medicine.
FSU College of Medicine students spend their first two years focusing on medical sciences and an introduction to clinical medicine at the main campus in Tallahassee.
During the third and fourth years, they are assigned to one of six regional campuses across Florida. The physicians from New Vision Eye Center will be teaching students from the College of Medicine’s Fort Pierce Regional Campus who choose an elective rotation in ophthalmology.
“The Treasure Coast physicians who work with our students provide a focused learning opportunity along with a mentoring experience that is producing more than outstanding test scores. Our graduates understand how to talk to patients and they know that it means to practice the art of medicine,” said Randall Bertolette, M.D., dean of the College of Medicine’s Fort Pierce Regional Campus. “These outcomes can be traced to the real-world experience and quality of teaching our students receive in the community setting. We are pleased to welcome Drs. Minotty, Meyer, O’Brien, and Tate to our faculty.”
Florida State’s community-based model of medical education differs from the more traditional medical schools, where the vast majority of the learning takes place inside of the teaching hospital or academic medical center. The model has drawn praise for guiding FSU medical students to exceptional results in standardized exams given to medical students nationwide following their fourth year of medical school.
New Vision Eye Center in Vero Beach specializes in general vision care, cataract and laser refractive surgical procedures, near vision lens cataract surgery, diabetic eye care and diseases of the eye including glaucoma and macular degeneration. The center’s team of leading board certified ophthalmologists include Minotty, founder of New Vision Eye Center; Meyer; O’Brien; and Tate.
